Fiordland National Park with its imposing sky high mountains are like another world. The Milford Road has many scenic stopping points. You’ll see reflective lakes, cascading waterfalls, stunning valleys and large glaciers and the classic dense native bush so well known in Fiordland. Before reaching Milford Sound you’ll travel through the famous Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km long tunnel through the heart of the mountain range.
Milford Sound has towering peaks, and powerful waterfalls dropping across massive cliff faces and dense, lush bush-clad hills stretching into the distance, Milford Sound is a raw, Jurassic haven like nowhere else in New Zealand.
We’ll take you on board a small group cruise vessel in the sound, a relatively small boat (approximately 20 metres in length), this is undoubtedly the best way to explore Milford Sound as this particular boat can get as close as possible to the waterfalls and colonies of fur seals, the rare Fiordland crested penguins and the pods of dolphins swimming in the crystal blue waters.
During your two hour small group Milford Sound cruise, you will be shown Lady Bowen Falls (a 162-metre waterfall that powers the Milford village), Sinbad Gully (a classic example of a hanging valley) and the magnificent Mitre Peak, which towers 1692 metres above sea level.
Start the day with an early departure from Queenstown, your expert local BLACK guide will collect you from your accommodation for the journey in one of our luxury European vehicles for the highest levels of comfort.
You’ll travel south along the shore of Lake Wakatipu, stopping for that much needed morning coffee before crossing Southland farmland and reaching the small town of Te Anau. Here there will be an opportunity to spend a bit of time exploring and pick up any additional food or snacks for the journey. Leaving Te Anau you’ll head into the stunning Fiordland National Park, with multiple stops enroute to Milford Sound to visit some of the classic scenic spots and those lesser known ones we have access to.
On arrival in Milford Sound you will take a 2hr cruise through the sound and out to the Tasman Sea, seeing the majestic waterfalls, towering peaks and adorable wildlife! On completion of your cruise, you can spend time wandering around Milford and stretch your legs before the journey back to Queenstown. If you wish to cut down the drive time and fly back, your guide can assist with making arrangements if available for a fixed wing or helicopter flight back to Queenstown.
